Slack adjusters are located on your axle housing near the wheel. They take up slack in the brake stroke when friction surfaces wear out. To get the proper clearance, you should pull your slack adjuster arm and measure the length. Typically, the arm will be between five and six inches long.
Manual slack adjusters come in a variety of configurations. MEI, for example, manufactures over 300 models. Each has a bi-directional body design. This minimizes problems with DOT roadside inspections. The slack adjuster also features heat treated alloy gears, threaded grease fittings, and a zinc-dichromate finish.
Slack adjusters are located between the pushrod and the S-cam on drum brakes. They are used to maintain shoe-to-drum clearance.
Generally, slack adjusters are adjusted by pushing in and holding to turn the adjusting bolt. However, some manual slack adjusters are equipped with a spring-loaded locking sleeve. This sleeve is a metal or plastic mesh that holds the adjusting bolt in place.
Manual slack adjusters should be lubricated periodically. You should use high-temperature, waterproof grease that is free of abrasives. When lubricating, allow the ASA to sit for a full brake application before you start turning the bolt.
Automatic slack adjusters should only be adjusted by a qualified mechanic. This will help prevent the unit from failing, thereby causing you to have to replace it.
